On Saturday 10th July, the centre of Harleston will be travelling back to 1620, the year when two brothers from the town, Edward and Samuel Fuller, sailed on the Mayflower for the New World. Living History: Harleston and the Mayflower is just one of many Mayflower-linked events that have taken place in Harleston over the last year, with support from the National Lottery Heritage Fund. Teams of actors will recreate the lives and concerns of genuine Harleston residents from the early 17th Century, including the owners of the Swan Hotel and relatives of the Fuller brothers who were wondering whether to join them in America. Combining scripted dialogue and improvisation, the Living History performances will take place simultaneously at six venues in the centre of the town from 10.30am. You're invited to wander between the venues, staying for as much or as little as you wish. There is no charge, and you will also have the chance to meet livestock from the period, including traditional breeds of sheep and horses.
After the Living History performances, a grand procession of a model of the Mayflower - built by members of the Harleston Shed together with Harleston Players set-builders - will take place, starting outside St John's church at 12:45pm. The procession will feature actors, musicians, stilt-walkers, flag carriers and more, so come and join the crowds to wave them on. The model ship will be put to use one week later, in the outdoor performances of 1620: A New World Odyssey, taking place on the Recreation Ground on Saturday 17th and Sunday 18th July, which will mark the culmination of the Mayflower 400 events in Harleston.
