Madame Arcati, a local clairvoyant, accepts an invitation to the home of Charles (a writer) and Ruth Condomine for dinner and to hold a séance. Their friends, the Bradmans, are also invited. Unbeknown to Madame Arcati, Charles has an ulterior motive in that he has writer’s block and is hoping to use the experience of watching her in action to help progress his latest book. However, the evening does not go as he had hoped, with the spirit of his attractive first wife, Elvira, accidentally being summoned up, which naturally does not go down too well with Ruth and events begin to spiral.
